The Fort Myers City Council will be presented with a proposal at their meeting on Monday evening, August 20, to allocate funds to repair and restore several pieces of public art in the city, including the United States Colored Troops memorial in Centennial Park. This memorial and others have suffered significant deterioration and damage in recent years, while public art such as the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee on Monroe Street remain in good condition. SURJ members in Fort Myers have been working with staff in the city's Public Works department for several months to see this memorial repaired. The funding proposal was originally meant to be presented to the city council for approval in May, but it was disappointingly delayed for much of the summer. This is an important piece of cultural art and history in our city and we are encouraging city leaders to repair this memorial first with the funding that is expected to be approved on Monday.

The memorial was unveiled on Veterans Day in November 1998. We are hoping for the memorial to be restored in time for the possibility of a rededication ceremony this November, to mark the 20-year anniversary of the memorial.

We are asking for supporters to send a quick e-mail or make a phone call to city council leaders to express your support for the United States Colored Troops memorial to be the first work of public art restored with the funding and for the city to support hosting a rededication ceremony for the memorial in November during the week of Veterans Day.

The funding proposal is listed as Consent Agenda Item 5 on the meeting agenda:
